Neil Harris has hailed the ability of Fred Onyedinma, claiming that the Millwall winger is reminiscent of two ex-Lions stars.

Onyedinma, 22, has endured a turbulent season, often being utilised from the bench by Harris.

However, the talented forward was awarded a starting spot during Millwall’s 4-0 demolition of Southend on Monday and justified Harris’s decision with an influential performance.

The Plumstead-born midfielder scored before half-time to provide the Lions with a 3-0 lead, and also had a hand it two other goals.

“Fred is in the same mould as Paul Ifill and Steven Reid,” Harris said.

“He is a wide player who we ask to be exciting. He is going to give the ball away - we understand that and Fred understands that.

“It's my job and my coaches' job to make sure he retains the ball more often than not but Fred is brilliant.

“He wants to play every minute of every game and he has got a bright future with us.”

Former Millwall forward Ifill, who also enjoyed spells with Crystal Palace and Sheffield United, played over 200 games for the Lions, while Reid spent five years at the Den before enjoying spells with Blackburn and West Brom.
