Ben Thompson admitted to having drastically mixed emotions after Millwall were knocked out of the FA Cup by Wycombe at the Den on Saturday.

The Lions midfielder cancelled out Paul Hayes’ opener, but his goal was eventually rendered futile as the visitors nicked an injury-time winner to book their place in the third round of the competition.

Thompson’s 25-yard strike against the League Two club was his first in a Millwall shirt.

“It was a great feeling for me, I’ve been waiting 16 games now but it’s finally come,” the 20-year-old said.

“I’ve had a good few shots now and thankfully now one has gone in. I’m always practicing that in training and I’m not scared to have a go from outside the box. As soon as I hit it I knew it was going in.

“It was a day of mixed emotions - I am very happy to have scored but it was a very, very frustrating result.

“I would have loved to have scored the winner or to be involved in a winning game, so it was very disappointing.

“Once you get it back to 1-1 you feel you’re going to go on and win the game but it was tough and the conditions didn’t help.

“We need to get over it and put our heads right for the next game.”

The Sidcup-born midfielder committed his future to the club last week by signing a new contract which runs until the summer of 2017.

Thompson, who joined the Lions’ Academy at 16 and is a boyhood Millwall fan, insists penning a new deal was an incredibly proud moment.

He added: “I was thinking before the game, what a good time to score a goal after signing my first deal, and that’s how it happened.

“I’ve just been getting my head down and playing my football, the manager told me that it would all be sorted and it has in the end. I’ve been concentrating on my football.

“It means everything to me. I’ve supported the club from a young age and always been a big fan - to stay here for as long as I can is excellent.”
