Millwall midfielder Ed Upson says he is willing to play through the pain barrier for his team.

Upson, who started out-wide in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Bury, had been out for five weeks with a knee injury suffered during the 5-3 defeat to Peterborough.

However, the midfielder has now returned and says he is ready to help push Millwall up the league.

He said: “It’s felt like a long time but it’s actually a lot shorter than it was meant to be. It was meant to be eight weeks, and when I came back it was five exactly.

“There’s still a bit of pain there, but nothing detrimental that’s going to make it worse so it’s just sort of getting through it and building confidence again.

“Every game I play it’s always in the back of my mind that it still does hurt sometimes and the more I play and the more I train it’s just about building the confidence back up and mentally knowing that it is alright and the more tackles I make the more my confidence builds.”

Upson lasted 81 minutes and afterwards manager Neil Harris called his performance “outstanding”, especially as he came into the side late due to Steve Morison’s illness.”

The former England U21 star, who received sugar injections during his recovery process, has experienced promotion to the Championship before during his time at Yeovil Town but admits there is more pressure and expectation at Millwall to achieve something this season.

He added: “There’s obviously a bit more pressure here than there was at Yeovil where we weren’t expected to do a lot, but here maybe we are expected to be one of the favourites to go up.

“You’ve got to take that on, its part and parcel of the game and the gaffer instils confidence in us every day in training, so we’ll worry about promotion maybe towards the end of the season, we’ll see where we get to.

“Obviously it’s in the back of our minds but we’re just concentrating on each game, and getting results and seeing where that takes us.

“It’s a long season and it’s a relatively new team that’s together so we’re just going to see where we get to and Tuesday night is another tough one, Burton are obviously above us at the moment, so we’ve just to recover and get our minds on the game.”
