Neil Harris has urged his Millwall side to put in performances of the same standard as their 1-0 victory over Bury in order to gate-crash the League One promotion party.

The Lions won 1-0 thanks to a first-half Shaun Williams strike, with the Irishman, who was skipper in the absence of Tony Craig and David Forde, driving the ball home left-footed into the bottom corner.

Millwall had dominated most of the play in the opening half but the second period proved a different story as Bury applied more pressure on hosts’ back-line.

“I was delighted with the first-half, I thought it was outstanding, some of our football was excellent. We created good chances and looked really threatening,” said Harris.

“The second-half was a lot more workmanlike, credit to Bury they certainly put us on the back foot but still I felt we should have extended the lead in the second half.

“Territory wise we got forced onto the back foot a little bit. They kept possession a little bit better, they’re full backs and wide players pinned us back. But I think they only had one chance and we missed three one-on-ones.”

Lions goalkeeper Jordan Archer made an outstanding save after just three minutes to claw out Peter Clarke’s header, and Harris said the performance of the back five was particularly pleasing.

He said: “Jordan [Archer] showed a lot of character today to come back after his mistake on Tuesday night, and to make that save early on and put in the all-round performance like he did, was really good.

“I thought the back four as a whole looked solid, aggressive and dominant. When you play against the calibre of Leon Clarke and Tom Pope you have to be in that frame of mind.

“I thought they were really good and capped off by young Noah Chesmain coming on to make his debut at left-back. It was a good day for us.”

Next up for Millwall in the league is third-placed Burton Albion on Tuesday night, with Harris looking for another solid display, which he says is essential if they are to harbour ambitions for promotion.

“It’s good to win games like today against a good side, but Burton are another good team.

“We’ve had narrow games against Bradford and Sheffield United, so all the teams in and around the top ten have been really close games.

“There’s not a lot between the top sides in this division, it’s just quality on the day, and we’ve got bundles of that in our team, so it will certainly test our credentials if we want to keep climbing up the league.

“I’ve said to the boys if we want to be in and around the top positions in the last 10 games, then results like today are key, performances like today are very important, but doing it for one game isn’t good enough, we have to do it again Tuesday against Burton.”
