During a brief hiatus from writing this column, I recently flew across the pond to Chicago for my best friend's wedding.

As the best man, I made sure my speech included the usual risqué one-liners and funny anecdotes associated with such an honour.

However, with most of the guests being from the States, I felt I had to use at least one American reference to appease the partisan crowd.

When offering some advice to the newlyweds, I suggested to the groom that getting into an argument with his new wife would be like the Chicago Cubs trying to win a World Series.

For those of you not particularly au faux with baseball, the Cubs are known, affectionately, as the 'loveable losers' having not won the game’s major honour for over a century.

Now, I'm not suggesting for a second that Millwall will go 100 years without winning at The Den, but the Lions’ inability to carve out a Saturday 3pm home victory has now passed 365 days.

Every piece I've written so far this season has bemoaned our home form and frankly, I'm boring myself talking about it.

Instead, I'll try a different tact - let's talk about something positive.

For starters, we have actually won a couple of games recently.

Away from home, the team have played with a freedom and flair witnessed only by a few hardy souls.

Young striker Aiden O'Brien bagged himself his first ever professional hat-trick against Crewe, proving we do have goals in the team.

The win at Port Vale last Tuesday is also not to be sniffed at.

The Valiants had already taken a point off high-flying Gillingham and were unbeaten at home before the Lions pitched up at Vale Park.

Judging by reports, five or six goals wouldn't have flattered Neil Harris’ team.

There were also several pleasing post-match comments made by Vale fans online, some suggesting we were the best team they had played all season.

From a personnel point of view, the return of Carlos Edwards – a popular figure among fans and players alike - has seen the back four look a little more settled in recent weeks.

His calming presence at right-back is the just the sort of experience Harris could do with and will no doubt help the younger members of the squad with their development.

Some of you will think I'm clutching at straws. Some of you may even think I'm a little bit mad.

But I think what we've seen so far could well be how the rest of the season pans out - a series of peaks and troughs, wins and losses, optimism and down-right despair.

We've seen it all before, we all know the drill.

Maybe it's time we just suck it up and get on with it.

Rochdale at home this weekend? Come on, what else are you going to do with your weekend?

See you there…
