Millwall fans have been accused of 'unprecedented level of violent behaviour' after crowd trouble in the relegation six-pointer against Rotherham.

Clashes between a minority of the 1,309 Millwall fans and security started after Rotherham United scored the winning goal.

After initially chanting for manager Ian Holloway's head, Millwall fans tried to invade the home section of the ground, forcing riot police to intervene.

It was reported that Millwall fans fought with stewards and police in both corners of the away end.

A police helicopter flew overhead at the final whistle with reports in the media area of more violence outside the ground, including unconfirmed rumours of a lady stewardess being struck by a brick.

A Rotherham United spokesman said: "Rotherham United are angered and upset at the unprecedented level of violent behaviour of some sections of the Millwall supporters inside and outside of the stadium.

"We are liaising closely with South Yorkshire Police to identify the individuals involved and our teams are already analysing all of our CCTV footage.

"Rotherham United will be in contact with Millwall FC to seek assurances that everything possible will be done to ensure the so-called fans involved in the incidents are brought to account."

Millwall boss Ian Holloway, who recently claimed his side's fans are unfairly treated, chose not to speak about the incident.

He said: "I didn't see it, I was concentrating on my job and I felt I acted with dignity from start to finish.

"So the Rotherham fans who were shouting at me about that, what do they want me to do, I am a football manager."

A Millwall statement read: "Millwall Football Club will do everything possible to assist Rotherham United FC and South Yorkshire Police investigating the disorder that occurred during Saturday's match at New York Stadium.

"The club's position remains clear - anyone associated with the club found guilty of violent behaviour will be banned from Millwall matches, in addition to any punishment they receive from the authorities.

"The club will wait until all necessary investigations have been completed before we will comment further.
