Millwall manager Ian Holloway is ready to freshen up his squad by letting players leave on loan to free up space in his budget and make new signings.

The Lions’ excellent start to the campaign has been undone by a winless September which culminated in Tuesday’s 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham.

Holloway knows he has to be careful to balance the books with Financial Fair Play starting to make an impact already, so the only hope of strengthening is if he can get players off the wage bill first.

He said: “There will be people I will let go out and I will try clear up some more money to bring in in certain areas if I can that I think we are really short in. That’s all you can do.

“If I can’t get them out then I’ll have to keep going and I’ll have to put some of the young ones in to see where we are because at the end of the day we are going to be governed by not how much the chairman has got but these new rules that are kicking in.

“It is funny all these people with millions and zillions and trillions and billions, they don’t get affected do they?

“They just pay a massive fine whereas we will get a transfer embargo on us.

“But I’m sure if I see anybody that I think will help us the chairman will support me.”

The biggest priority is to boost a backline which conceded 10 goals in five September Championship fixtures.

Ollie added: “If this defence is leaking goals I might have to work a new one and see if I can give Byron Webster a go, see if Danny Shittu is fit yet.

“He isn’t, but I’m going to have to work on it because when you ask the same people to do the same things all the time and the pressure grows it is difficult - people lose confidence.

“We’ve got lots of work to do, it’s as simple as that.”
