New dawn for SLKPA
LAST Thursday saw the summer season in the South London & Kent Pool Alliance (SLKPA) get under way with action in the tier two west division.
The newly formed elite league and tier two east commence in two weeks time.
A new concept and structure to the SLKPA should make for some interesting pool this season with the league set out like a pyramid with one top division and two parallel lower ones beneath it.
The matches are formed of three sets of five frames resulting in a point gained for each set won in order to promote tighter matches.
Two new teams to the league engaged at the Coach & Horses and it soon became apparent the hosts are going to be at the forefront for a promotion bid.
Against the all-girl side from The Woodman, Coach cruised to a 3-0 sets victory.
It was not until the final set The Woodman registered a couple of frames, but captain Jenny Mapp admired the fine pool The Coach & Horses played and said, even in defeat, the girls had a great night and didn't disgrace themselves.
Another team with high aspirations are The George IV B.
With a few new faces to their fold, they beat Woolwich Catholic Club 3-0.
One-time Catholic Club player Terry Higgs came back to haunt his old team by picking up three wins, ably supported by Joe Kane, who did likewise.
The Kings Arms, despite not being at their strongest, needed to use all their experience to squeeze past The Mitre 2-1.
Lee Green Constitutional Club got the season off on a positive note with a 2-1 success against the new boys from The Ship & Billet, the Billet Busters, although the Busters put up a strong fight.
If the rumour mill is to be believed, both of these teams may well be in the shake-up come the end of the season.
New teams are always welcome into the league.
Friendlies can easily be arranged for any new teams considering playing in the SLKPA on Thursday evenings.
