HAVING played a league match on the previous evening, Jamie Day selected a young team in Welling United’s London Senior Cup tie against Kingstonian and experience told as the visitors won convincingly.
Only Loick Pires, who had missed the game at Basingstoke through suspension, was a first team regular and he captained the team that also included non playing substitutes Jordan Johnson and Tamer Tuna from that game.
Goalkeeper Jack Moore, full backs George Horne and Harry Cullum, and midfielder Josh Patrick all made Welling first team debuts whilst Jack Kensington played just his second senior game.
Meanwhile, Kingstonian fielded five players who had started their last league along with other senior players including former Arsenal midfielder Ian Selley.
It took just seven minutes for the visitors to go ahead through Bobby Traynor and Moore had to be alert to tip over a deep cross.
Jake Winchup, in the Kingstonian goal, almost embarrassed himself when his delayed clearance was charged down by Pires but fortunately for him the ball rebounded off the Welling striker and over the bar.
Tom Hutchinson had a long shot deflected wide for a corner and Cullum made a brave block before half time to keep the deficit to just one goal.
Much like the start of the first half, Kingstonian struck early in the second period courtesy of Hongi Moon goal.
Quentin Conteh almost got in for Welling but Winchup punched the ball away before Traynor scored his second and the K’s third.
Day then made changes bringing on Ryan Flack for Conteh and then Steadman Callender for Pires.
Patrick hit a shot wide for Welling as they came more into the game before the exciting Flack hit a tremendous effort that rattled the crossbar.
Another Patrick effort was saved by Winchup before Kingstonian broke away and scored a fourth through Stuart Duff.
Jack Taylor, who had partnered Oliver Poole at centre back, suffered a nasty looking injury and had to be replaced by Matt Raffle.
Callender showed great pace and then skill to make room for himself before his cross was punched away by Winchup as Flack closed in.
Tuna cut in and had a shot saved, Flack also called Winchup into action, and then turned his defender well before shooting wide before Kingstonian had the final opportunity of the match bringing out a good save from Moore.
