ALL the pre-match hype had been about Charlie Sheringham’s summer move from Welling United to Bishop’s Stortford but the marksman barely had a sniff as the Wings enjoyed their best away day
performance of the season .
Despite travelling difficulties, both by road and public transport, Welling supporters still turned out in good numbers and were rewarded with a four goal win, which could have been considerably larger.
Player-manager Jamie Day and play-maker Lee Clarke ran the midfield and Welling thought they had gone ahead as early as the second minute when Jack Parkinson forced the ball home. The goal was disallowed for an earlier infringement.
This set-back did not prove too disheartening and two minutes later Welling went ahead.
In the first of many swashbuckling raids down the left hand side, the outstanding Sam Hurrell pulled the ball back. Clarke made up ground well to put the ball into the six yard box and Tommy Whitnell stretched to nudge it over the line.
Andy Pugh then had a snap-shot that went wide before again failing to hit the target after being played through by Clarke.
After Pugh fired over following a cross from Hurrell, the two combined again and Pugh’s shot was tipped onto the post by Nicky Eyre. Whitnell put the rebound over the bar.
Pugh then turned Alex Bentley, on loan from Dagenham and Redbridge, inside out but Clarke failed to hit the target with his side-footer.
Glen Southam’s frustration at being second best throughout got the better of him and he was rightly shown a yellow card for a needless foul shortly before half time.
Having scored in the fourth minute of the first half Welling repeated the trick in the second period. Pugh was tripped inside the penalty area by Bentley, who was shown the yellow card, and Clarke stepped up to slot the spot kick home.
Three minutes later and the game was finished as a contest as Pugh collected the ball and scored with a spectacular thirty yard drive.
Whitnell had a shot well saved by Eyre and Clarke missed two good chances, the first heading over an inch perfect cross from Carl Jenkinson and then shooting too high after Hurrell had outpaced and outwitted Ben Nunn and Ritchie Jones.
Yet another Pugh shot produced a good save from Eyre before Loui Fazakerley, enjoying victory over his former club, was replaced by Tony Finn.
Eyre was called into action again making a brilliant save from Hurrell but Welling scored their fourth from the resultant corner. Day swung the kick over and Parkinson, left totally un-marked at the far post, nodded into the gaping net.
Day and Hurrell, who appears to be forming a good understanding with Jack Obersteller, were then withdrawn allowing Michale Bakare and Sam Cutler a short outing.
Goalkeeper Charlie Mitten was finally called into action making a routine save from Louis Riddle before Finn hit the outside of the near post from a tight angle having made the opportunity for himself.
Shortly after Jenkinson had a chance to record his first Welling goal but headed wide from close range having found himself un-marked from Finn’s corner.
Sheringham and strike partner Bertie Brayley had been shackled throughout by Graeme Andrews and Parkinson so Mitten had to be alert to save well from Brayley thus ensuring his clean sheet remained intact.
Welling United: Mitten, Jenkinson, Obersteller, Day (Cutler 81), Andrews, Parkinson, Fazakerley (Finn 75), Clarke, Whitnell, Pugh, Hurrell (Bakare 81). Subs not used: Deane, Cracknell.
