WELLING United gained ample revenge for their Boxing Day defeat by Bromley in the return fixture at Hayes Lane on New Year’s Day as they completely outplayed the Lillies from start to finish.
The only surprise was they did not score more than one goal, due mainly to sterling work by Jerrome Sobers and goalkeeper Gareth I Williams.
Bromley could not get going against a well-organised defence.
Their play lacked ideas or the passion of the visitors and they became increasingly disjointed, something which Mark Goldberg’s second half substitutions made distinctively worse.
In a game similar to the one at Park View Road last week, it was the visitors who made all the running.
Tom Whitnell was through on goal within the opening five minutes but shot tamely at Williams before the keeper raced out of his goal to deny Sam Hurrell.
Bromley might have opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Luke I’Anson weakly headed against the upright following a deep cross from Ashley Carew, while Jamie Day curled a free-kick just wide of the post for Welling five minutes later.
The Lillies had another chance on 24 minutes when I’Anson’s cross was headed well wide by Warren McBean when he should have at least tested the keeper.
But from the goal kick, ex-Bromley player Loui Fazakerly turned on the edge of the 18 yard box to shoot just wide of the post.
On 37 minutes, a long goal kick by Williams was missed by defender Jack Parkinson and Phil Ruggles reacted quickly for a snap-shop which nearly caught Charlie Mitten off his line, only for the keeper to scramble back to make the save.
Welling finished the first half as they had begun with Lee Clarke and Andy Pugh both testing the Bromley keeper.
The visitors continued to call the tune and two minutes into the second half Whitnell was unlucky when his header, from Hurrell’s cross, went just the wrong side of the post.
Jerrome Sobers denied Pugh with a timely tackle inside the area three minutes later.
Williams made a first class save down at the foot of the post from Jack Obersteller’s free-kick following a foul by Salifou Ibrahima on Whitnell.
And the Bromley keeper got down well to divert Whitnell’s goalbound cross shot with his arm minutes later.
Welling’s pressure paid off on 63 minutes when Bromley allowed Parkinson a completely free header into the top corner of the net from Fazakerly’s corner.
They should have made it 2-0 four minutes later when a flowing movement ended with Pugh arriving unmarked in the box to side foot a cross just inches wide of the post.
Williams palmed away a Pugh effort after a mistake by Tutu Henriques had let the on-loan player a sight of goal.
In the closing minutes, Bromley forced a series of corners, from which Adrian Stone headed over from five yards out.
Harrison Dunk then forced Mitten into his first save of the second half in the 90th minute when the Wings keeper denied the full back at the near post.
It was a sad start to Bromley’s New Year and had they won, the Lillies would have moved up two places to sixth position.
As it was, Welling moved into the top half of the table with a comfortable victory.
