TYPICALLY Boxing Day fixtures between two local sides are lively affairs but when Welling United entertained Bromley they produced a pretty tame offering in front of two quiet sets of
supporters.
The hosts dominated the early stages and Tony Finn’s shot was deflected past the post by Tutu Henrique with goalkeeper Gareth Williams stranded.
Michael Deane had a shot wide of goal although he was fortunate that his handling of the ball was not spotted as he broke through.
Former Bromley player Loui Fazakerley caused his old club problems and new signing Wes Daly along with Luke I’Anson were shown yellow cards for ugly challenges on him.
In between Rob Gillman, with his head bandaged following an early crack, nicked the ball off Tommy Whitnell’s toe as the Welling striker looked set to score, and Andy Pugh curled an inviting ball into the penalty area that nobody was able to convert.
Player manager Jamie Day whipped in a free kick that Lee Clarke headed over then Welling came agonisingly close from another free kick.
Deane’s delivery eluded Williams and when the ball fell to Graeme Andrews his shot from a tight angle came back off the post. Jack Parkinson collected the loose ball but his ball into the goal area failed to find a team mate and Bromley were able to clear.
Finn had another shot off target before Bromley won their first corner of the match and made the hosts pay for not converting any of their opportunities.
I’Anson’s shot was deflected wide but the Wings defence failed to deal with the cross and Ryan Dolby crashed the ball home from close range via the under-side of the crossbar for the 37th minute opener.
A move involving Clarke, Finn and Day ended with Pugh shooting wide as Welling attempted an instant reply but Bromley doubled their lead two minutes before the break.
Prolific striker Warren McBean was given a late Christmas present by being allowed the freedom of the Welling penalty area and he made no mistake heading Ashley Carew’s cross past Charlie Mitten in the Welling goal.
Bromley were disrupted losing Aaron Fray with apparent concussion and Daly with a leg injury within the first six minutes of the second half but made light of the problems and controlled the game for large parts of the period.
Fazakerley managed a shot on target for the hosts before an audacious long distance lob from Bromley debutant Phil Ruggles landed just over the goal.
Henrique became the third Raven to be cautioned for a foul on Fazakerley and Clarke’s foul earned him Welling’s only booking.
Ruggles should have added a third but shot wide on the turn and Mitten saved from Salifou Ibrahima as Bromley looked to kill the match off.
Clever play by the Wings captain Parkinson got him to the by-line but his enticing cross was not attacked by any of the Welling strikers and Bromley escaped.
Parkinson found life less comfortable moments later when lively Bromley substitute Marcus Cassius left him in his wake but shot wide from a good position.
As the match approached injury time, foolish petulance from I’Anson saw him shown a second yellow card resulting him sitting out the additional six minutes however Bromley held tight and went home with a well earned three points.
