Non-league rivals set for derby fun

CHRISTMAS may be a time to put your feet up and relax, but there is no such let-up for those involved in the non-league football scene.

The players and staff of Welling, Bromley, Ebbsfleet, Dartford and Cray Wanderers will be as busy as ever, with some cracking derby games set to take place over the festive period.

Blue Square South duo Bromley and Welling will clash twice in a double header, while Dartford and Cray Wanderers also cross swords twice in quick succession in the Ryman Premier Division.

Welling are expecting a bumper crowd at Park View Road for the Boxing Day meeting with the Lillies and supporters of both sides are reminded the game kicks off at 1pm.

There will be a few sore heads and hangovers in the stands when the roles are reversed on New Year’s Day, when Bromley have home advantage over the Wings in a game which starts at 3pm.

Readers should note the original venues which appeared in this week’s edition of News Shopper are the wrong way round and it is in fact the Wings who host the Boxing Day game first.

Supporters are also reminded to check wellingunited.com and bromleyfc.net before setting off for the games to make sure they are definitely on following the recent cold snap.

Temperatures are expected to rise slightly in the coming days and Welling FC told News Shopper this morning they are “quietly confident” Saturday’s match will take place.

Meanwhile, league leaders Dartford host struggling Cray at Princes Park on Boxing Day (1pm) before visiting Hayes Lane on January 2 for the return meeting (3pm).

Ebbsfleet boss Liam Daish will be hoping for some festive cheer as his side battle to pull clear of the Conference danger zone.

Season ticket holders can bring along a friend for free against Grays Athletic on December 26.

Fleet visit Hayes on December 28 and Grays on January 1.
