McCarthy: Being underdogs at Carlisle will suit Ebbsfleet

EBBSFLEET assistant boss Paul McCarthy believes being underdogs will suit his side in next month’s FA Cup first round tie at League One Carlisle United.
The Fleet booked their place in Sunday’s draw thanks to substitute Moses Ashikodi’s 87th minute winner in the final qualifying round at fellow Conference side Woking.
But the draw was far from kind to the Stonebridge Road side with a journey to a town close to the Scottish borders awaiting.
Despite this, McCarthy is confident Fleet can upset the odds at Brunton Park.
“It was probably the worst tie we could have had in terms of the trip we could have had,” he said.
“But being in the first round is a massive thing for us and everyone is looking forward to it.
“Carlisle are a League One side and it is going to be very tough but we are going to give it a right go.
“There is no pressure on us as nobody will expect anything from a side who are second bottom of the Conference.
“Personally I think that suits us.
“The FA Cup is a massive thing for everyone with the finances it brings in and the possibility of battling through to the third round and taking on some of the big boys.
“Our players would only have been able to dream about going to some of the teams you can meet in the third round, so the incentive is certainly there for them to make those dreams come true.”
McCarthy also felt Saturday’s 1-0 Woking success was the least Fleet deserved after a spirited display from the Kent side.
He added: “I was very pleased with both the performance and the result.
“Woking are a good side and we knew beforehand their front players were dangerous.
“Not only did we keep them out but we also managed to create a few opportunities of our own.
“They created a lot of problems for us when they came to our place in the league but that wasn’t the case on Saturday.”
