EBBSFLEET United were held to a goalless draw by Cambridge United at Stonebridge Road last night.
The opening exchanges were very even, with both teams cancelling each other out.
Luke Berry hit the side netting for the visitors early on, while Joe Howe fired over at the other end on 15 minutes.
Despite having the majority of possession, the Fleet were unable to carve out any goal scoring chances and it was the away side who came closest to breaking the deadlock.
Berry forced a great reflex save from Preston Edwards before two minutes later United were gifted a golden opportunity two minutes later.
Howe bundled Harrison Dunk over in the box, only for former Fleet player Ashley Carew to miss the spot kick after Edwards guessed the right way.
Edwards was called into action again on the half hour to produce a superb fingertip save from Tom Shaw’s effort from the edge of the box.
Ebbsfleet looked more dangerous in the second half as Nathaniel Pinney hit the side-netting several times within 10 minutes of the restart.
But it was substitute Ricky Shakes who came closest to giving Ebbsfleet the lead.
Picking possession up in his own half, Shakes drove deep into opposition territory, forcing Danny Naisbitt to mirror Edwards’ first half fingertip save after 75 minutes.
In the dying moments of the game Edwards yet again rescued Ebbsfleet by blocking Michael Gash’s shot and showing why he fully deserved his man-of-the-match award.
