DARTFORD boss Tony Burman admits he isn’t getting too worried about pre-season results so far and is happy his players are getting their sharpness and fitness back.

The Darts went down 5-2 at home to Gillingham on Friday night, despite taking a two-goal lead early in the first period.

“It’s always tough but you can’t take too much notice of the score in these games,” said Burman.

“But the fitness side of it is so important to us.

“This was our sixth session in two weeks, although we’re looking at how far we’ve come around the 60th minute mark.

“I’m really pleased Andy Hessenthaler brought all of his team as it gives us a bit of stamina in the bank.”

Darts took a 2-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes and were on top until Gillingham drew level before half-time.

“The first half is pleasing but it’s difficult for the lads who are coming on at the break,” insisted the boss.

“All off a sudden they’ve put seven players on who are quicker with the ball and it’s something for us to look up to and emulate that sort of play.”

After a torrid start to last season, the Darts finished in 10th position and Burman is hoping his side have learned from their mistakes and can push on in the new campaign.

“The next step is to get inside the 10th spot,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ll be pushing for a play-off place and instead of making the first round of the FA Cup, let’s get to the second round.

“If we’re in the last 16 of a trophy competition, we’ve got to go and try and win it.

“That’s what you do, you strive to do better but the league is our most important thing and hopefully we’ve learned from our mistakes last year.

“Hopefully we'll be inside the top 10 and come March, you’re looking to get a play-off space and that’s what our aim has to be.”

Burman seems content with his staff at present but admits he may add a couple more fresh faces before the season kicks off.

“I’m happy with the squad so far,” he added.

“Charlie Sheringham didn’t play, he has got a slight tightness on his hamstring, but there could be one or two players still coming in before the start of the season.”
