5:11pm Monday 5th December 2011 in Cray By Jerry Dowlen
CRAY put in a strong second half performance to inflict a heavy home defeat on Horsham after the hosts had levelled early in the second half to cancel out Mark Willy's 16th minute opener.
The Cray skipper fired home following a free-kick, although Horsham had started the game with two near misses when Calum McGeehan shot into the side netting and Tyrone Sterling did well to clear Ray Freeman’s shot off the line.
Freeman’s goal in the 46th minute looked like a fluke, as the wind took his curling cross from the right wing and the ball beat Andy Walker to land inside the far post.
Cray had brought several good saves from home keeper Ken Westoby in the first half, while Tommy Whitnell hit the bar.
But the Horsham defence collapsed after Leigh Bremner punished an error to restore the Wands’ lead in the 61st minute.
Whitnell set up Danny Phillips for a tap-in midway through the second half and Phillips added a superbly-struck fourth on 82 minutes.
Tony Dolby netted from the penalty spot after Lewis Perkins was upended three minutes before the end.
The Wands are at home to Bury Town on Saturday (3pm) and will meet Bromley in the London Senior Cup fifth round on Sunday (3pm).
Both games are at Hayes Lane.
It will be a busy weekend for the club off the field too as the Wands are staging an exhibition at The Bull Inn, St Paul’s Cray, to showcase the plans for their proposed new football stadium at Sandy Lane.
Cray will apply on February 9 for planning consent from Bromley Council.
The plans can be viewed between 10am and 2pm at The Bull Inn, admission is free.
