THE first match in a new annual football competition saw one side win three nil while the man of the match award went to the opposing goalkeeper.

Bexley Police FC met the borough’s gay-friendly football club Bexley Invicta FC for the Aslie Pitter trophy, in a match played in front of a good crowd, including Bexley’s deputy mayor Councillor James Spencer.

Also at Welling United FC’s ground for the game was Aslie Pitter who was given an MBE in this year’s New Year’s honours.

He set up London’s first gay football team, Stonewall FC, 20 years ago and has done much work to stamp out homophobia in football.

It was the police team took the match and the trophy, winning the game 3-0.

But it was Invicta’s goalkeeper Adrian Lewis who won the man of the match award.

Deputy borough commander Detective Superintendent Darren Williams described the game as “fantastic” while Bexley Invicta captain Brian Silk said: “Despite the result, this was an enjoyable day for the club.

“Football is a great way of breaking down barriers and building relationships.”
