Sutton 0-1 Bromley

BROMLEY edged through a difficult FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Sutton’s Gander Green Lane on Saturday.

Yet again it was Pierre Joseph-Dubois who scored the only goal of the game for Bromley midway through the second half to give the Hayes Lane team a victory they just about deserved.

The opening stages were rather tame as neither side created any chances.

But the hosts might have gone ahead in the 15th minute when a long pass into the Bromley area picked out Kezie Ibe but under pressure from Moses Swaibu, he trod on the ball and the danger was averted.

This seemed to spur Bromley on and shortly afterwards Joseph-Dubois went close with a header before Albert Jarrett’s free-kick cannoned off the defensive wall for a corner.

A Jarrett cross caused problems in the Sutton defence on 25 minutes and was headed behind for another corner kick by a grateful defender.

Two minutes later another cross from the Bromley wingman was met by a stretching Michael Malcolm, who could not direct his header towards goal.

Sutton responded as half-time approached with Nick McKoy rifling wildly over the bar and Ibe’s fierce shot being blocked by Swaibu on the six-yard line.

Jarrett, having received a knock in the closing minutes of the first half, was replaced at the break by Ali Chaaban.

However, Chaaban only lasted 22 minutes as he received an elbow to the chest and was unable to continue, being replaced by Tony Finn.

The home side came more into the game in the second period and Craig Watkins wasted a good opportunity on 56 minutes when he headed wide Harry Beautyman’s free-kick after Aaron Rhule had held the Sutton winger back.

Watkins’ shot on the turn was well saved by Joe Welch two minutes later.

A Danny Waldren free-kick fizzed across the face of the Sutton goal and from the goal kick the home side produced a flowing movement which ended with Ibe scuffing his shot in front of an exposed Bromley goal.

The only goal of the game came with 16 minutes remaining when Finn produced a fine pass, which Joseph-Dubois took in his stride to calmly place a shot through ex-Bromley keeper Tom Lovelock’s legs for his fifth goal in the last four matches.

Bromley might have added a second five minutes later when a poor clearance landed at Elliott Buchanan’s feet, only for the newcomer to hurry his shot and fire over from a good position.

In the closing stages Bromley’s time wasting tactics were nearly punished as Sutton’s Simon Downer volleyed over the bar and Watkins just failed to get onto a downward header from six yards out.

But they held on to go into Monday’s draw.
