Lillies held by Farnborough

BROMLEY once again failed to take maximum points at Hayes Lane on Saturday when Farnborough held them to a draw.

In the end, the Lillywhites were fortunate to escape with a point.

The home side started the game brightly and enjoyed all of the possession in the opening 20 minutes, during which time they should have built up a commanding lead. But Farnborough came back into the contest and pushed Bromley back for the remainder of the game.

The hosts opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Pierre Joseph-Dubois rounded full-back Adam Bygrave and laid a pass across the area to Albert Jarrett.

Jarrett turned two defenders and crossed to Joseph-Dubois, who volleyed his effort into the ground before the ball bounced up over Farnborough’s keeper Jake Sommerville and into the top corner of the net.

The visitors responded with Doug Bergqvist heading a corner high and wide, while Jed Wallace’s 20 yard shot went wide a few minutes later.

Bromley might have doubled their lead on 28 minutes when Michael Malcolm’s header was superbly tipped over by Somerville from Jarrett’s free-kick.

The same two players combined seven minutes later, but this time Malcolm’s header just shaved the bar.

As Farnborough came more into the game, Phillip Page went close, Marcus Moody had an effort blocked before Nic Ciadrini’s free kick was punched out by Joe Welch to the edge of the area, only for Bergqvist to blaze wide. As the half closed, Wallace was allowed to run 30 yards at goal and only the quick thinking of Bromley’s keeper, who rushed out to block the strikers shot, enabled the hosts to go into the interval in front.

Bromley should have extended their lead in the 49th minute with good work by Malcolm, who slipped a pass inside the full-back for substitute Orlando Smith to run onto, but the defender recovered sufficiently to block Smith’s shot.

Farnborough were pushing Bromley further and further back and it was no surprise when they gained a deserved equaliser in the 62nd minute from the penalty spot. During a period which Bromley failed to clear the danger, Tutu Henriques was eventually adjudged to have handled and Page stepped up to blast the spot kick straight down the middle to put his side level.

Within a minute Page galloped through a static defence, only for Welch to bravely save at the striker’s feet.

Bromley knew it was not going to be their day when on 74 minutes as Orlando Smith met Jarrett’s corner and his goal-bound shot beat the keeper but hit the back to Moses Swaibu on the goal line before deflecting over the bar.

Farnborough had several half chances in the closing stages and should have taken all three points in the 90th minute when Liam Harwood misjudged his tackle on Michael Charles.

The substitute ran on to send in a rasping shot, which Welch did well to palm around the post.

Bromley are at home to Weston on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
