BROMLEY crashed out of the FA Trophy when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Didcot Town on Saturday.
The defeat extends the Lillywhites’ losing run to six games.
Southern League Division One side Didcot Town, 40 places and two divisions below the hosts in the pyramid, totally outplayed a Bromley side who, with the continuous changes to the starting XI, lacked cohesion for the challenge ahead.
Didcot had the better of the opening exchanges, forcing a number of corner kicks, so it was no surprise when the visitors opened the scoring on 19 minutes.
Alex Stanley’s stunning volley from Kevin Halliday’s cross left Bromley keeper Tommy Forecast clutching air as the ball flew past him and into the back of the net.
But Bromley were handed a lifeline five minutes later when former Bromley keeper Dean Santangelo clattered into Hakeem Araba and the referee awarded a penalty.
Santangelo was cautioned for his troubles and Danny Waldren stepped up to convert the spot kick to level the scores.
Waldren then went close on two occasions shortly afterwards, but it was Didcot who always looked the more likely to score again. Marlon Patterson cleared Uchechukwu Ikpeazu’s chip off the line on 37 minutes before Forecast did well to punch Halliday’s corner from underneath the bar two minutes later.
The visitors did restore their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Ikpeazu caught Forecast off his line and delightfully chipped the keeper from 25 yards.
Bromley made two substitutions at the break, but it made no difference as Didcot continued to call the shots.
After a spell of sustained pressure on the Bromley goal, the visitors increased their lead on 59 minutes when a cross from the left was headed home by an unmarked Richard Pierson.
Bromley rallied for a while with off target efforts from Lewis Taylor and Bradley Goldberg before Araba was denied by a good save from Santangelo.
But for the third Saturday in a row, the Lillywhites had a player sent off as Waldren was shown red for a two-footed tackle on Danny Seaward in the 74th minute.
This all but ended any chance of a comeback and Didcot comfortably held on to a famous victory over a Bromley side seemingly lacking in both confidence and ideas.
