BROMLEY slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat on Tuesday evening when lowly Hampton & Richmond Borough won at Hayes Lane, even though the visitors were reduced to 10 men on the hour.
Hampton were in front after just two minutes when Joel Ledgister sent a glancing header into the far corner following a cross from Paul Johnson.
It might have been two six minutes later when Dave Tarpey’s ferocious 30-yard effort rattled the crossbar.
The visitors increased their advantage on 16 minutes with an own goal. Nathan Collier was allowed to run from the halfway line unchallenged before sending a cross into the danger zone, where the unfortunate Lewis Taylor fired home from 16 yards into his own net.
Taylor nearly made amends in the 25th minute with Bromley’s first attack when he scooped over from eight yards after Hakeem Araba’s shot had been parried.
Things did improve for Bromley 10 minutes before the interval. Marlon Patterson’s free-kick went just wide of the left upright before Rory Hill, clear on goal, curled his shot around keeper Craig Ross, only to see the ball come back off the post.
Aaron Rhule’s follow up was cleared off the line by Jonathon O’Donnell and from the resultant corner, Ross made a smart save from Danny Waldren’s downward header.
Bromley reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time when Tom Hickey gifted possesion to Araba. He fed Taylor, who returned the compliment and Araba slammed home from close range.
Araba’s header was well saved by Ross two minutes into the second half, but that was the only save he had to make after the break despite his team being reduced to 10 men on 61 minutes. Full back Lewis Ferrell scythed down Orlando Smith and both players needed treatment.
Ferrell was booked for the challenge but then appeared to come back onto the pitch without permission, for which he was shown a second yellow card.
Bromley will feel hard done by after Hill was brought down a yard inside the box by Dean Inman and referee Mr Woolford awarded a free-kick outside the area, despite the assistant indicating a penalty and being closer to the incident.
However, the man in the middle completely ignored his colleague.
In the closing stages the visitors were denied a third goal by Bromley keeper Tommy Forecast. After Rhule had been dispossessed on the halfway line, Tarpey broke clear before cutting in where Forecast tipped his shot around the post at full stretch.
Bromley are now just two points clear of the relegation zone.
