BROMLEY suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of promotion hopefuls Chelmsford City at Melbourne Park on Saturday.

Victory for the Essex side extended their unbeaten run to 17 games, a record which stretches back to September.

Bromley began the game brightly to force three corners in the opening stages, but fell behind in Chelmsford’s first attack on 16 minutes after Kezie Ibe was allowed to turn and score from just inside the area following a good run by Aiden Palmer.

For the second week running, Bromley had a player sent off when Tutu Henriques was adjudged to have handled on the line in the 19th minute when the ball came at him from point blank range.

As a result, he was red carded somewhat harshly and David Rainsford converted the resultant penalty to make it 2-0.

Bromley keeper Tommy Forecast made a brilliant one-handed save from Max Cornhill’s header but it was the same player squeezed home Chelmsford’s third on 28 minutes.

Forecast did well to deny Cornhill again before the keeper came off his line to block Michael Bakare’s shot after the winger had got clear on goal, while Sam Corcoran fired wide of an open goal as half-time approached.

Chelmsford made it four early in the second period as Bromley’s defence all stood off to allow Bakare a free run at goal before he placed a firm shot wide of Forecast in the 53rd minute.

Having replaced the injured Liam Harwood at the interval with Orlando Smith, Bromley made two further changes on 58 minutes when Nathan Green and Rory Hill came on in place of Marlon Patterson and Aaron Rhule.

But it made little difference as Chelmsford pressed home their one-man numerical advantage.

Forecast was called into action to deny Ibe and then Corcoran, while Bakare’s shot on the turn went just over the bar.

However, Bromley did reduce the arrears on 78 minutes when Lewis Taylor netted following good approach play by Smith and Bradley Goldberg.

But it was Chelmsford who added to their tally as substitute Joe Benjamin found the net after being allowed to turn in the area to chip Forecast.

Smith went close for Bromley before the home side chalked up a sixth goal in the first minute of stoppage time after substitute Craig Palmer superbly curled a shot wide of Forecast, following a good run by Aidan Palmer.

There was still time for Mark Haines to hit the underside of the bar before the final whistle signalled the end of Bromley’s nightmare.
