Hampton & Richmond 0-2 Bromley

BROMLEY gained revenge for their home defeat earlier in the season on Saturday at the Beveree when they overcame a poor Hampton & Richmond side more easily than the result suggests.

Completely dominating from the off, they played some attractive football not seen by the Bromley fans for a long time and had they taken just a few of their chances, they would have surely scored a hat full.

Bromley pressed forward at every opportunity and Phil Ruggles and Richard Butler were causing the home defence all sorts of problems.

With Ashley Carew and Steve Ferguson giving support down the flanks, Bromley looked a threat every time they went forward.

Steve Ferguson had two great chances to put Bromley ahead in the opening five minutes.

The first attempt saw him shoot over following a knockdown by Butler and then Butler picked out Ferguson but his cross-shot was only just held underneath the crossbar by keeper Matt Lovett. At the other end, Craig Dundas fired wide for the home side.

Carew then had a 30-yard goalbound shot deflected for a corner at the last moment.

Salifou Ibrahima saw his low shot from a similar distance saved at full length by Lovett before an audacious lob by Ruggles from 25-yards caught the keeper off his line, but the ball sailed just past the wrong side of the post.

Dave Tarpey was denied by Williams on 19 minutes before he shot wildly over a few moments later after playing a one-two with Barrie Matthews.

Ferguson’s cross on 35 minutes was met by Butler, but his header lacked power and direction and went safely through to the keeper.

Ruggles had another good effort gathered by Lovett, but Bromley suffered a blow when Butler limped off with what appeared to be pulled ligaments just before the interval.

Warren McBean replaced him at the start of the second half and Bromley soon got into their stride again when Harrison Dunk skimmed the crossbar with a 20-yard volley after 47 minutes.

Bromley deservedly opened the scoring on 54 minutes. A long cross-field pass by Wes Daly picked out Carew on the left and although his first cross was blocked, his second was brilliantly back-heeled into goal by Ruggles.

Bromley doubled their lead 11 minutes later when a flowing move involving Carew, Mark Corneille and Ferguson saw them break down the right before Ferguson crossed to McBean, who out jumped Lovett to head home into the top corner of the net.

Dunk made a last-ditch tackle to deny Stuart Lake and Tarpey might have done better when firing over from 12-yards, but Bromley soon returned to attack.

Daly’s 35-yard drive was just wide of the upright and Ferguson’s shot from the edge of the area was well saved by the keeper.

In time added on, Ramon Calliste might had done better when he scooped Dunk’s defence-splitting pass wide of the post.

Tarpey, Hampton’s main threat all afternoon, might have reduced the arrears but he blasted over from a good position in front of goal, which left Bromley with their 11th clean sheet of the season and a thoroughly deserved three points.

Bromley: Williams, Corneille, Dunk, Daly, Sobers, Henriques, Carew, Ibrahima, Ruggles (Calliste 90), Butler (McBean 46), Ferguson. Subs not used: Greene, I’Anson, Dolby. Att: 470.
