Gillingham include unlikely face on bench at Dartford
GILLINGHAM manager Martin ‘Mad Dog’ Allen lived up to his nickname at Princes Park on Saturday by sitting in the dugout with his own hound.
The League Two side were taking on Dartford in a pre-season friendly and won 1-0 thanks to a 73rd minute winner from Ben Strevens.
It was certainly ruff justice on the Darts, who enjoyed several chances to take the lead before debutant Strevens came off the bench to ensure Gills got their noses in front.
Allen changed his entire team on the hour but decided against bringing on his dog in the end.
The mutt made his displeasure clear on the final whistle by rolling around on the pitch as Allen gave his press conference, although it wasn’t clear whether he was handing in a transfer request or not.
Allen’s dog could get another chance to shine this weekend when the Gills return to north Kent for another friendly with Ebbsfleet United at Stonebridge Road.
Dartford continue their pre-season at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday at 3pm and welcome an Arsenal XI to Princes Park on August 1 before signing off their friendly fixtures at Tonbridge Angels on August 4.
