LIAM Trotter will resume contract talks with Millwall once the Championship season is off and running.

The highly-rated midfielder has two years left on his current deal and manager Kenny Jackett has made no secret he wants to see that extended.

Trotter’s name has been linked with several Premier League clubs this summer, most notably newly promoted Southampton.

But the man in question says he just ignores the rumour mill, instead preferring to concentrate on what lies ahead in 2012-13 with the Lions.

Trotter told News Shopper: “Me and the club haven’t spoken about it for a little while, we are just leaving it for pre-season to get out of the way and then we will start talking then.

“I don’t really pay much attention to it (the rumours) to be honest.

“That is just paper talk as far as I’m concerned.

“For me it is about Millwall this season.”

And Trotter is chomping at the bit to finally get the new campaign underway after an exceptionally long pre-season caused by an early return for training and the Olympics delaying the start of the real action.

He said: “Pre-season is going well.

“I picked up a niggle early on which isn’t great because getting in injury in pre-season is probably the worst time to get it as you always feel you are playing catch up.

“I’ve got fit now and managed to get some minutes under my belt in the last three games. It was my first 90 against Southend on Tuesday night so I’m feeling good and on course for the start of the season.

“It feels like we’ve been back for ever to be honest, the summer holidays seem a long time ago but we all get used to it quickly.

“With the pre-season games we’ve had it feels like the season has started already anyway.

“We are ready for the season now and just want it to get started.”

Millwall will start at home to Blackpool, the side they ended last season against at The Den in a 2-2 final day draw, a result Trotter attaches no significance to ahead of next weekend’s encounter.

“They’ve made new signings over the summer and had made a couple of changes to their team on the final day of last season because they were preparing for the play-offs at the time,” he said.

“A lot of things have changed since that day. It is a new season, a new game and I don’t think either side will be looking back too much to what happened that day.

“It is always nice to be at home in the first game.

“The fans get to see how the team is going to play this season and you’ve got them behind you, so it sets you up nicely if you can get a good win.

“There is a lot of games there in a short period of time, especially when it is going to be your first batch of matches coming back from pre-season.

“It is just the way the Championship and one of the reasons why it is one of the hardest leagues in the world because of the number of games and the schedule.

“We’ve been preparing for it by having a bit of a longer pre-season.”

Trotter added: “We are confident that we are fit, ready and will just have to do our very best in those games.

“A good start is always important because it sets you up for the rest of the season.

“Our season was very mixed last year.

“I think we did reasonably well at the beginning but we didn’t seem to get the results, whereas towards the end those results started coming.

“If we can get to January time in a good position and can finish well again then who knows where we might end up.”
