Millwall boss Kenny Jackett feels his side are now ready for the coming season after wrapping up their pre-season with a 4-3 win over Charlton.

The thrilling goal feast, a testimonial for Alan Dunne, concluded a productive series of tune-up games for the Lions ahead of their first league game at Reading on Saturday.

And Jackett admitted the back-and-forth local derby was the perfect dress rehearsal for the coming campaign.

"I thought it was a good game for Alan, a competitive game," he said, "and in terms of a spectacle the goals helped as well.

"There was a local derby feel about it and it certainly was at the tempo of a league game which is a very good thing.

"There were some bits of quality from ourselves, but also some things we need to work on overall.

"I thought when we went 4-3 up that we were loose with our passing, we were loose at times throughout the second half and I think we can be more compact and retain it better.

"We're quite open at the wrong times when we're ahead so we need to work on that."

Between the pros and cons of their performance at the Den on Saturday, Jackett is nonetheless confident the loss of key players such as Steve Morison won't halt Millwall's forward momentum in their second straight Championship term.

He said: "I feel ready. There's nothing like the first actual league game.

"Whatever you've done, wherever you've been, the first two or three league games are tough and you have to work really hard to adjust and get competitive.

"It's a different style going forward for us now without the likes of Steve and we have to adapt and different people have to come to the fore.

"You have to find that balance in terms of going forward, but having said that I don't want to be conceding three goals every game like we did today."
