QPR loanee not at Charlton just to make up numbers

CHARLTON’S new loan recruit Rob Hulse admitted after his new side’s 2-1 home defeat to Watford last night he is in SE7 to start regularly and not just sit on the bench.

Although the season is relatively young, the Addicks currently find themselves at the wrong end of the Championship table.

But the QPR loanee is confident he can re-establish his career by coming in and doing what manager Chris Powell wants of him.

“I’ve not come here to sit on the bench,” said Hulse.

“I’m coming here to challenge for a place.

“We’ve just got to keep upbeat and things will change.

“He (Powell) just wants me to come in and be myself, train hard, get involved with the boys and hold the ball up and score some goals.

“It’s not been an easy time at QPR with injury and bits and bobs.

“But that’s football, you’ve just got to get on with it and bounce back.”

Hulse only joined the Addicks on Monday morning and has had little time to learn everyone’s name, let alone get a first impression of the squad.

But despite Tuesday’s defeat, Hulse believes Powell has a good squad at his disposal and it’s only a matter of time before the results turn in Charlton’s favour.

He added: “I think we’re a good side and I think the boys were a bit unlucky tonight.

“Watford defended very well once they went down to 10 men and made it difficult for us.

“We’ve just got to take our chances.

“There are lots of good players here.

“At this level you’ve got to play as a team and I think Ricardo Fuller did well and held the ball up well.

“It was a good through ball for his goal, we just needed to do a bit more of that.

“We’re a good side with lots of energy and I’d take heart from seeing that tonight.

“It’s a down changing room but I see it turning very quickly.

“We just need to be a bit shrewder in front of goal and perhaps not give away as many free-kicks, because at this level you just get punished.

“I’m here to get back playing football again.

“Charlton have given me the chance to do that and I’m very grateful, so I’m going to do the best I can.”
