CHARLTON meet Stevenage Borough for the first time in the Football League on Saturday and boss Chris Powell is determined there will be no shock.

The Addicks remain unbeaten this season and lead the way at the top of League One.

Stevenage made a positive start to life in League One following last season’s promotion via the play-offs, but have lost four games on the spin since hammering Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 on September 13.

But despite their opponents being out of sorts, Powell is expecting the proverbial kitchen sink to be thrown at his side from the word go.

He said: “Stevenage will be a tough game, I’ll tell you that right now.

“They are all tough at this level in different ways. They obviously done extremely well last year, are a club which has grown with their manager and done particularly well.

“For them to be in League One for a club of their stature is a fantastic achievement.

“I’ve watched them recently myself and my assistant manager has watched them.

“We aren’t going to take them lightly, that’s for certain, but is a game for us to really work hard and impress our game plan and what we do best.”

Powell added: “We know the pressure of being at the top and teams will always try to up their games to be the ones who beat the leaders and take their scalp, so we are wary of that.

“But we’ve worked particularly hard on one or two things that didn’t go to plan last week against Tranmere.

“That’s football - it is a game which changes in seconds, never mind minutes.

“We’ve got to be ready for Stevenage, it will be a tough place.

“It will be very up and at us straight away, the tempo will be very high and we’ve got to make sure we are ready for that but to be brave enough to play and do the things we are good at as well.”

Stevenage’s last game produced a 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield, although the result was overshadowed by a confrontation on the final whistle between Borough boss Graham Westley and opposite number Lee Clark.

However, Powell is convinced both managers will already be looking at the spat as water under the bridge.

He said: “Whatever happened there is between Huddersfield, Lee Clark, Graham Westley and Stevenage.

“I saw it like everyone else on the TV.

“Emotions run high during games and sometimes after.

“You shake hands, you do what you have to do and, as most people will tell you, most managers speak afterwards.

“I’m sure Lee spoke to Graham afterwards.

“It doesn’t matter what goes on, football is a small world and they may regret what happened afterwards and their players but as much as you can I think you’ve got to concentrate on the job in hand for you and your team.

“You don’t want to see it but it happened and to be honest with you I’m sure both managers have forgotten about it and they’ve moved on to their next game.”
