CHRIS Powell admitted Paul Benson’s future at Charlton is now in the striker’s hands after the club agreed a fee with League One rivals Notts County.
The former Dagenham forward missed Charlton’s 0-0 draw at Woking on Saturday, heading north to watch County draw 1-1 with Wolves.
However, reports elsewhere since have suggested the deal is in doubt over a failure to agree personal terms.
Benson has a year left on his contract at The Valley still to run but speaking on Saturday before the potential move to Notts County hit problems, Powell hinted the striker’s Addicks career wasn’t necessarily over just yet.
He said: “I wouldn’t say Paul Benson is on his way.
“We’ve agreed a fee, but we’ve left it open to him because at this stage in his career he has a year left on his contract.
“If Notts County offer him a longer deal, I can’t offer him any longer at the moment so I’m trying to be fair to him.
“He’s a striker and a player who will score goals at this level, so you don’t want to let go of that too easily.
“I think Paul still wants to be a part of things here but obviously he’s looking at his future contract wise.”
