ON-LOAN Charlton star Lee Martin’s dynamic cameo from the bench against Peterborough may cause selection headaches for manager Phil Parkinson.

Martin, in SE7 for the season from Ipswich, had found playing time at a premium as of late thanks to the form of the likes of Scott Wagstaff, Johnnie Jackson and Joe Anyinsah.

But following an early switch during the Addicks’ 5-1 win at London Road on Saturday courtesy of a groin injury to Anyinsah, the 23-year-old made hay with a blistering performance capped off with his first two goals in the league this season.

And while the ex-Man Utd whizkid hopes to keep this going in upcoming fixtures, he has had no problem with waiting his turn on the bench while his positional rivals have been doing so well.

He said: “I think that’s just the way football goes sometimes. I got my chance and I took it.

“I can’t really argue about not playing because the lads have done so well, but you either sit there and sulk or you work hard and the boys have been brilliant with me.

“Our top scorer plays on the wing and Jacko’s got a few now so they’ve done really well so it’s one of those where I can’t really knock on the gaffer’s door and ask why I’m not playing so you’ve got to be patient.

“The main thing for me is to go out there and enjoy myself and the three points were massive for the boys because they’ve put us in a good position and confidence is sky-high now.”

The decisive victory away from home to a team tipped to be battling Charlton for promotion certainly turned a lot of heads throughout League One and even among the Addicks support.

But Martin believes the team always knew they were capable of such performances, and are glad they’ve finally amassed the confidence and team spirit to make it happen.

He explained: “We all knew we were capable of this form but sometimes you get knocked back but we’ve done well to come back from the setbacks and we’ve moved on now.

“It’s one of those leagues, like the Championship, where anyone can beat anyone on their day so we’re just concentrating on ourselves and doing everything right in the week and seeing how it goes on the Saturday.

“I think the staff were really impressed with the first half performance so it was important in the second half, especially the first 15 minutes, not to concede because they would come after us and try to push us.

“But our back four today were amazing and they stayed firm, everyone played their part today.”
