YOUNG Charlton striker Joe Pigott is hoping to work his way into Chris Powell’s first-team plans this season.

The 19-year-old impressed with a first half hat-trick as the Addicks romped to a 5-0 friendly victory over near neighbours Welling United at a scorching Park View Road on Saturday in what was his first involvement with the senior squad.

Valley boss Powell’s attacking options are limited to just one at present as he looks to dip into the transfer market ahead of the big kick-off at Bournemouth on August 3.

Yann Kermorant is currently the only attacker on the books in SE7 following the departures of Ricardo Fuller, Danny Haynes and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

But 6ft2in finisher Pigott is hoping his success with Charlton’s U21 side last year, coupled with his immediate impact this pre-season, will see him edge closer to the first-team.

He said: “It was great for me getting three goals in the first half, but hopefully it is just the start of things for me this season.

“I’ve taken a lot of confidence from last year.

“There’s definitely a clear pathway, so it’s good to be here.

“With Yann currently being the only senior striker on the books, it fills me with a bit of confidence.

“Let’s hope I keep continuing to impress.”

Pigott’s partnership with seasoned striker Kermorgant caught the eye for those in attendance in Welling.

The two linked up for all three of Pigott’s strikes and the Addicks academy product, who spent time on loan with Bromley in the Conference South last term, relished the chance to play alongside the experienced Frenchman.

Pigott added: “It was very good to play with Yann, he created every one of my goals and I took my chances so I’m very happy with that.

“He’s a top player who I can learn a lot from so it’s very exciting playing with him.

“The service he was giving me was good so I enjoyed it.”
