YANN Kermorgant has one eye on the play-offs as he prepares for his second Championship season at The Valley.

The Frenchman scored one and made three as the Addicks thumped Conference new boys Welling United 5-0 in the traditional pre-season curtain-raiser at Park View Road on Saturday.

Charlton finished just three points shy of a top six finish last time out and speaking after his first 45 minutes of the summer, Kermorgant admitted he wants to build on last-season’s effort.

He said: “If I want to improve and do better, it will have to be to get to the play-offs.

“I don’t want to talk too early, but we have to work hard and we will see after a few games if we’re ready to be in the top six.

“I’ll just do my best and try to be the best that I can be.”

Kermorgant is currently the only recognised first-team striker on the books at The Valley, but the 31-year-old formed an exciting partnership with academy product Joe Pigott at Welling, setting up all three of the 19-year-old’s hat-trick goals.

And the experienced attacker was full of praise for his young strike partner.

Kermorgant said: “He did well, when you score a hat-trick in your first appearance in the pros it’s very good.

“I know he’s a proper striker and he loves goals and I like to play a little bit deeper, so as soon as I got the ball I tried to find him and we did well.

“He made great runs and when I saw it, I tried to give him the ball in the right way and he made a great finish.”

The game was played in a sweltering heat and with Charlton travelling to Spain this week to continue their preparation for the new campaign, Kermorgant felt the conditions will have prepared the squad well for training on the continent.

He explained: “It was very, very tough because we don’t get hot weather for many days.

“It’s difficult to run because your throat is dry, but we’re going to Spain so we have to prepare.

“The trip to Spain is very good because we work hard and we're all together for a week.

“It’s a good time to be together.”
