ADDICKS blogger MATIAS GREZ looks back on an impressive season for Charlton in his final column of the campaign.

WITH the season sadly coming to an end, and with plenty for everybody connected with Charlton Athletic to be proud of, I want to look back at some of the outstanding performers in the side, in particular over the last two months.

I’ll start with who I think has been the most improved and best player during the eight-match unbeaten run, Dorian Dervite.

The centre-half has fast become one of our most reliable defenders and since his introduction as a regular into the starting XI, the team has conceded fewer goals and kept more clean sheets.

Prior to Dervite playing as a centre-back, whether it was as a holding midfielder (which clearly didn’t work) or sitting on the bench, the team conceded 10 goals in eight games, keeping just one clean sheet, winning two and losing four.

However, since starting against Bolton, we haven’t lost once in eight games, winning five and drawing three, as well as conceding just seven goals and keeping three clean sheets.

Dervite has great composure and surety when in possession and is not afraid to pass out from the back, something he does so very effectively.

This, coupled with his huge presence in the air, which sees him win as many headers at the back as Yann Kermorgant does up front, will surely be enough to see Chris Powell hand him a two or three year contract.

Another player whose return has coincided with the run of unbeaten games is Andy Hughes.

He has used his experience to great effect in the defensive midfield role, bringing calmness to the side that rarely sees him give away possession and keeps the team ticking over.

Powell stuck by Hughes during his long spell on the sidelines due to an Achilles injury, and now the gaffer has had a chance to see what the 35-year-old can do on the pitch, I’m sure a contract extension isn’t far away.

Onto possibly my favourite player to ever wear a Charlton shirt - Kermorgant.

The big Frenchman is a fan’s, manager’s and fellow player’s dream come true.

He works harder than any player I’ve seen before and often his efforts are fruitless, as he can become isolated up front.

However, he is the most selfless striker I have ever come across and will never stop running, chasing and battling for the team’s cause.

He also bags a few goals for himself, finishing the season joint top of the scoring charts with Johnnie Jackson, who is probably my second favourite Charlton player of all time.

Of course, you can’t have a best player list without mentioning Chris Solly.

The right-back was last week voted player of the year for the second time running by the fans and is a much better player this summer than he was last, when he attracted the attention of Premier League clubs (and Bolton).

Nobody can deny Solly will go on to become a Premier League quality right-back, if indeed he isn’t already, but preferably he will be playing there with Charlton in a few years’ time.

I’m sure the list of clubs wanting to sign him this summer will be as long as Powell’s arm, but I am convinced if we can hold onto him and our best players, then another promotion won’t be far off.
