Was Peterborough result a good or bad one for Charlton?

ADDICKS columnist MATIAS GREZ admits this week his side are in the relegation mix but isn’t sure yet if last night’s 2-2 draw at Peterborough was a case of two points dropped or one gained.

THE worst part of Saturday’s defeat against Burnley was the fact the vast majority of us Charlton fans fully expected it.

There wasn’t a single moment in the game when it looked as though Chris Powell’s team would manage to steal a point.

On Saturday I came to the stark realisation a lot of the players at Powell’s disposal simply aren’t good enough to challenge for places any higher than just outside the Championship relegation zone.

Whether it took me this long to realise was because of my hopeless optimism, or because of my automatic love of anyone in a Charlton shirt is irrelevant, but Saturday’s display snapped me out of it.

Saturday afternoon also led me to once again query the gaffer’s questionable tactics.

By deploying a player of Bradley Pritchard’s ability and style at right midfield, you’re automatically setting your side out not to score goals.

Meanwhile, a player of Danny Green’s ability and style who is actually a right midfielder with flair and creativity, is sat on the bench for the majority of the game - and the majority of the season.

As much as Pritchard improved when he was moved inside against Burnley, you can’t have a player with only non-league experience at the hub of your midfield and expect to be successful at this level.

On to Tuesday and the draw against Peterborough was difficult to gauge.

Was it a success or failure?

On the one hand, considering our awful run of form, it can be viewed as a point gained.

On the other hand, it can just as easily be seen as yet another two points dropped from a winning position.

Anybody who says relegation isn’t at the very least still a distinct possibility is kidding themselves, you only need to look at the table and see just the six points separating us from the bottom three to confirm this.

If the next two rounds of fixtures go against us, we could find ourselves in the drop zone.

However, I totally understand why so many are against using, or even mentioning, the R word, as keeping a positive energy around the club is paramount to any future success.

But the facts need to be faced - one win in eight games and one clean sheet in 10 is relegation form.

Coming into the campaign, everybody knew the aim was to remain a Championship club for another season.

However, I doubt anybody thought at the start of the season we would be this close to the bottom three, and especially considering our comfortable mid-table position just a few weeks ago.

At this stage of the season I feel as though all we can do it get behind the team and please, please, please stop booing the players off at half-time and full-time.
