Powell impressed by new year improvement from Charlton
CHRIS Powell’s Charlton continued their excellent away form on Saturday with a comfortable 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers.
In fact, if the Championship table was judged only on results away from home then the Addicks would find themselves flying high in fourth position.
Around 400 hardy Charlton supporters fought the elements to make it to Ewood Park and Powell was delighted his side were able to continue their great form on the road before praising those who made the long trip north.
“Obviously a few people would like us to win more home games,” conceded Powell.
“But being a manager I just want us to win points.
“For us to get another win on the road is very good for us.
“We work on our tactics, we work on what we need to do in each and every game and the players carry it out.
“Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn’t but away from home we have done very, very well.
“We’ve had a good January so far and obviously now have got a home game against Sheffield Wednesday to look forward to.”
The SE7 gaffer added: “I would always say to the supporters of my club we always care for one another.
“I’m really pleased they made it here safely, that’s the first thing, but also to see their team really put in a terrific effort for them, as well as each other.
“They want to see us win, they want to see us perform.
“Sometimes we won’t always win but I’m sure it just caps it off that they can go on the long journey home again safe knowing their team has got three points in the bag, so I’m really grateful for them coming up.
“We had to come up yesterday not knowing whether the game would be on or not.
“But we prepared right, the game was on, we get three points and everyone can go back down south really happy.”
January has been a stark contrast to the Addicks’ fortunes in the final month of 2012 as Charlton only picked up three points from a possible 18 in December.
Powell admitted 2012 ended with a bit of a whimper but is thrilled with the response of his players.
He said: “After having such a tough time in December and having a few knockbacks, we have really set off this year in the right way.
“Away at Watford, and putting one game aside (Huddersfield), I think on Saturday and in the Blackpool game we have given everyone that lift that we wanted to.
“We’ve always said that we could compete and do OK in this league, we’ve always felt that we could do it but obviously it’s about actually doing it.
“You can talk about it all the time, we have beaten some decent teams and there have been some results which have gone against us but that is football and that is the Championship.
“You’ve just got to keep going and keep believing things will turn around and be right for you.
“Certainly that is happening at the moment.
“Of course there are times when things will have to go for you but I think it’s about that belief and that quality, because I’ve got some quality players.
“I’ve always felt I’ve got some good players who at times have let themselves down and haven’t expressed themselves but I know they’ll go again.
“They’re only human, they’re not going to play well all the time.
“You want them to but occasionally things will go against you.
“When you have the momentum and you have that character and you believe you can do the right things, over the course over a game more often than not you’ll get results.
“Of course if you get wonder goals as well as team goals then that can only help, so it’s a good place for us to be at the moment and long may it continue.”
