Deadly Darvill puts Cray into next round
A late, late goal by substitute Jamie Darvill put Cray Wanderers through to the next round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Greenwich Borough in the 1st qualifying round.
It was a cruel blow for gallant Greenwich whose goalkeeper Luke Roberts had stopped a series of stinging shots from Cray strikers Laurent Hamici and Michael Power to keep the scoreline blank as play entered time added-on.
One scorching shot from Hamici had rippled the side-netting early on, and the woodwork had denied Hamici a goal shortly after the restart.
Cray huffed and puffed but couldn't blow their Kent League opponents' house down until Darvill was introduced as substitute with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
There was always a danger that Borough might embarrass their Ryman Premier visitors with a goal on the break, and the Wands were grateful to defenders Billy Burgess and Joe Vines for scything tackles that rescued two dangerous situations near the end.
Injury had reduced Greenwich to ten men in the closing stages, and Darvill was unmarked in front of goal when he directed a smart header past Roberts after a well-worked Cray move had seen Power send in a cross from the right.
Cray: Walker, Pooley (Parkinson 63), Burgess, Day, Vines, Sterling, Power, Saunders, Bremner (Darvill 75), Sproson, Hamici.
