MICHAEL Morrison doesn't mind missing out on his first Charlton goal with the Addicks continuing to keep it tight at the back.

Morrison found himself in a can't-miss position shortly after advancing up the pitch for a Charlton set piece against Sheffield United on Saturday, thanks to a clever assist from Paul Hayes.

The defender let the moment get to him, however, and was unable to find the target to open up his scoring account for his new club.

But after goals from Yann Kermorgant and Bradley Wright-Phillips gave the Reds a 2-0 win at Bramall Lane, the 23-year-old was more proud of his contribution to another clean sheet.

He said of his miss at the other end: "I saw the goal and I thought 'I'm going to score here' but it never turned out that way.

"I was kind of waiting for it to bounce in front of me, I needed it to bounce a little quicker, and at half-time Paul Hayes and I both agreed that I should have flicked it on to him instead.

"Luckily enough, we got the goals in the second half but I could see the goal in my head and could see myself celebrating. It got to me and it was a poor strike, I should have done better.

"I won't be changing position any time soon. I might try to get up the pitch for a few more long throws but even that might be pushing it."

Nonetheless, the win means Charlton have collected seven points from nine in their last three games, with the two goals conceded both coming from the spot.

Morrison said of the side's form: "I think we know deep down at the back that if we can keep a clean sheet, the lads will score the goals so it's imperative that we keep it tight at the back, and we have.

"Chris Solly & I have both been disappointed to give penalties away recently, but it happens, we have to move on from it and to keep a clean sheet here is something not many teams will do."

He continued: "It's a big result for the lads. It's been a really good week as before the Chesterfield game we would have definitely taken 7 points.

"The point at Milton Keynes was a good result but to get three points at Bramall Lane is fantastic. It puts a bit more of a gap in the table and it says that we're here to win the league and get automatic promotion.

"We're in a great position at the moment but we've only just started. There's a long way to go and we're all aware of that.

"We've got the Paint Trophy game against Brentford on Wednesday and then Tranmere next weekend which is just as big as the Sheffield game as there's no point coming here and winning but not following it up with a win at home.

"The boys are focused but we'll enjoy it today on the way back as it will be a journey back with three points."

The centre-back, signed from United's fierce rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, admitted patience was a virtue after the Addicks weathered a tough start to emerge victorious on Saturday.

He explained: "Today was a tough game and they battled hard but I think our quality just showed a little bit in the second half and we got the two goals.

"Once we got the first goal, it put United on the back foot and we built up enough momentum to get the second and kill off the game.

"We all knew the game wouldn't be won in the first minute. Sheffield had some good pressure for the first ten but we rode that and got into the game.

"Everyone was battling across the pitch and the two centre midfielders were there to break their play up. I thought as the game got on, we slowly got on top and deserved the win."
