Cray Wanderers suffered a Boxing Day defeat at local rivals Greenwich Borough as three second half goals inflicted a second straight loss over Christmas.

A cagey first half came alive just after the hour with Greenwich scoring two goals in two minutes through Charlie MacDonald and Billy Dunn before Lee Prescott fired Cray back into it in the 71st minute.  However a third Borough goal four minutes later through Rob Denness put paid to another Wands fightback.

On a bright early afternoon the first half saw few chances with Cray perhaps having the best moments courtesy of Danny Haynes who was unlucky with a decent shot from the edge of the penalty area which forced Borough keeper Craig Holloway to make a fine one handed save.

For Greenwich, Mohamed Eisa tested Cray keeper Nick Blue with a low strike from a free kick which was pushed behind.  Then Haynes fizzed a shot wide of the left post but the first half remained goalless.

The second half was a different story and the Eltham based side threatened from the start of the half and took the lead in the 62nd minute.  Midfielder, Bradley Pritchard hit a shot which Blue parried but only as far as MacDonald who lifted a shot into the net at the near post.

Two minutes later, it got even better for Greenwich Borough when Dunn pounced to lash a fine shot into the top corner of the net to leave Cray with an uphill task.

The Wands though did pull a goal back in the 71st minute which owed a lot to the perseverance of Haynes who picked the ball up in midfield and jinked his way down the right to put over a fine cross which found Prescott who found space and placed a neat finish wide of Holloway.

Cray’s hopes of a comeback were finally dashed in the 75th minute when an Eisa left wing free kick into the box was turned in by Denness and Borough were able to comfortably see out the rest of the game.

Cray drop to tenth in the Isthmian League South table and are next in action on Saturday (31st December) at home to Ramsgate (1pm kick off) and then again on Monday, 2nd January at home to Chatham Town.
