An entertaining cup run ended for Welling United with a meek home defeat against Whitehawk.

One change was enforced on Welling with the injured Dan Walker replaced by new loan signing Craig Braham-Barrett. He filled in at left back, Jordon Brown pushed up to the left side of midfield and Dean Morgan joined Adam Coombes up front.

Braham-Barrett had barely had a chance to meet his new team mates before they went behind. Mike West's long cross field ball sent through sent Reece Connolly away, and he slotted home beyond Chris Lewington.

Despite the new laws, referee Elliott Kaye took no action when surrounded by Whitehawk players when he correctly insisted one of their players leave the field to remove his red undershorts.

At this point, Welling had a free kick that Coombes blasted into the wall. A raised hand blocked it and the free kick moved eight yards forward. Whether it was the handball or dissent that warranted it, Ben Strevens found his way into the referee's notebook.

Morgan fired the follow up free kick into the wall and the danger was cleared.

Wilfred Tagbo, in for the suspended Danny Mills, then headed wide from another long angled cross field ball from Dan Harding. West then sneaked in behind but flicked wide of the far post.

Ali Fuseini came close for Welling with a low shot that Ross Flitney touched onto the post and wide.

At half time, Welling manager Mark Goldberg made a change bringing on Lyle Della-Verde for Brown.

It appeared to matter little as Southam fired over before Whitehawk missed a great chance to put the game to bed.

Tagbo collected a long ball and squared to Connolly but Lewington made himself big and saved with his feet.

Lyle Della-Verde then came close for Welling after good work by Dean Morgan but Flitney kept his effort out at the second attempt.

Southam tried his arm again but curled wide before Matt Fish made a last ditch clearance as Targbo got in behind the Welling defence.

Fuseini was off target again before Lewington made a great save at the far post from Lucas Rodrigues.

As the game entered the latter stages, Della-Verde had a shot deflected into an easy save then Fuseini fired well wide.

Any hopes that Welling had of forcing a replay ended when Coombes headed over late on.
