Alan Pardew has revealed he tried to sign James Tomkins on several occasions while at Newcastle United.
Crystal Palace boss Pardew, 55, has been a long-term admirer of Basildon-born Tomkins and signed the defender in the summer.
The former England U21 player notched up over 200 appearances for the Hammers but joined the Eagles for around £10m.
Tomkins has made a bright impact at Selhurst Park and Pardew admitted he attempted to link up with the versatile defender while at Newcastle.
Pardew said: “Tomkins is a great player, I tried to sign him a few times at Newcastle. He’s doing very well for us.
“I don’t think he has anything to prove to West Ham fans. He’s born and bred there.”
