Following a mini revival Welling United slumped to defeat at Poole Town.

Victory over Eastbourne Borough in the league and at Whyteleafe in the F.A. Cup, meant that the Wings travelled to Dorset in confident move but they failed to deal with the hosts' direct style of play for large parts of the game.

Starting brightly, Lee Wort fired a shot for the Dolphins that was blocked in the opening moments and Steve Devlin fired well over from the rebound.

Then Welling had their first chance when Lyle Della-Verde was brought down on the edge of the area. Dean Morgan took the free kick and missed by inches.

It then went back to the other end and chaos ensued with Welling twice making goal bound blocks before Danny Waldren cleared.

After Welling had again stretched the Poole defence but not created a clear cut opening the hosts again worried the Wings from a dead ball situation. Jamie Whisken saw his header saved and Lewis Lindsay followed up with a shot that went wide after clipping the post.

Fifteen minutes had passed before the deadlock was broken. An excellent passing move was ended when Lindsay flattened Waldren in the area and Dean Morgan sent Nick Hutchings the wrong way from the spot.

Suddenly, the game took on a cup tie feeling and Richard Gillespie had a weak effort saved as the hosts hurried and scurried to press Welling.

Most of the danger came from dead ball deliveries and Chris Lewington made a brilliant point blank save from Gillespie before saving Will Spetch's floating follow up header comfortably.

Gillespie then beat the Welling back line but was forced out wide so could not find the net from a tight angle when chipping Lewington.

Neither side made changes at the break and again Poole came out looking lively.

Twice they were off target early on with Luke's Burbridge and Roberts failing to hit the target.

There could be little surprise when Poole equalised and even less that it came from a dead ball situation.

Devlin's free kick came back off the wall and Roberts was one of three lined up to strike the rebound. Lewington did well to keep out the shot but Whisken followed up to head home.

Lewington made another excellent save from Burbidge before a rare Welling attack ended with Hutchings doing well to save from Adam Coombes at close range.

Ali Fuseini then tried his luck but Hutchings saved easily.

Another break saw substitute Dan Walker slip free but he shot over from a tight angle when a pull back might have been a better option.

Once more, Lewington was called into action when Gillespie cut inside and fired an effort from the edge of the area, but the Welling custodian saved comfortably.

Then came the moment that defined the game. Morgan went down in the area, and rightly the referee waved play on however Fuseini burst in, following up, and appeared to have been taken out by a rash tackle for which Welling should have been awarded a penalty.

That proved pivotal as the game went into injury time and substitute Sam Surridge got in behind the Welling back four and poked beyond Lewington for the winner.

Manager Mark Goldberg will be looking for a quick response when Welling are back in cup action next week.
