Russell Slade was delighted to send Charlton fans home happy after his side beat Shrewsbury Town 3-0 at the Valley.

Charlton started brightly and after wasting a couple of opportunities, Ricky Holmes fired the home side in front with a stunning strike.

Two minutes later Johnnie Jackson prodded home his second of the campaign, before Holmes scored directly from a corner on 31 minutes.

The Addicks were unable to punish Shrewsbury after the break but the three points – and the clean sheet – were never in doubt.

“I’m pleased we managed to get that first win,” Slade said after the game.

“We had a lovely 20 minute spell where we took the game by the scruff of the neck.

“I’m pleased for the players, the staff and above all the fans that we’ve got a result.

“We’re showing signs of improvement each week really. I’m very happy but I’m not getting carried away. We’ve won one football match and there’s lots more to play.

“The support again was fantastic from the fans.”

After a strong start to the League One fixture, summer signing Holmes dribbled into the Shrews’ half before finding the top corner with an unstoppable strike.

Moments later a cross caused problems in the visitors’ box and skipper Jackson was on hand to beat Jayson Leutwiler from close-range.

Holmes, who was energetic and dangerous throughout, then found the back of the net straight from a corner to round off an impressive first-half display.

“He’s taken two wonderful strikes,” Slade said of Holmes.

“Obviously he’s slightly fortunate with the corner but he’s put it into the right area.

“The first strike was exceptional and that’s something he is capable of. And then Johnnie turns up at the right place at the right time and gets a goal as well.”

Charlton had a dire defensive record in the Championship last season and Slade admitted he was thrilled his side kept Shrewsbury at bay.

He added: “That was my big thing tonight. I was more thrilled in many ways with the clean sheet because it shows a real resilience.

“It would have been disappointing if they would have got a goal to get back into the game after we worked so hard to get an advantage.”
