Simon Makienok believes his strike partnership with Igor Vetokele can help lead Charlton to Championship survival.

The pair were on target in the 4-1 win against Rotherham which ended a 12-game winless run on Saturday.

The Addicks are now only one point from safety and two-goal hero Makienok feels his relationship with long-term friend Vetokele can aid Charlton's relegation fight.

He said: “I’ve known Igor for many years and we played back in Denmark for different teams and I always liked his type of play and now we can play together.

“I think we can work out a good relationship. We know how to play alongside each other and we enjoy it.

“Let’s see in the next game [if I’m back to my best], this was my first game in three so I just want to give everything and help the team get out of this situation.

“We can definitely stay up, as Riga said when he first arrived, he wouldn't have come here if he thought he couldn't do it and that’s the feeling we all have.

“Everyone is believing. We have to do it together because we can’t do it as one person.”

The returning Ademola Lookman got the South Londoners’ fourth goal in injury time and three of the strikes were set up by Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

Makienok is Charlton’s top scorer with five goals after his brace at the ASSEAL New York Stadium.

He is happy that Addicks boss Jose Riga believes in him and has restored his confidence.

The 25-year-old added: “This was my first start and game under Riga, he saw me in training and told me that he knew I could perform and gave me the confidence of starting the game.

“I know I can do it - I’ve tried with former teams being in difficult situations and I know I’m good mentally and strong enough in these situations, so I was happy for him to put me on the pitch.

“I wanted to show him that he made the right decision and it worked out well.”

Just before netting his second goal in the 69th minute, Makienok had a tussle with Millers’ captain Kirk Broadfood and later admitted it felt good to silence him.

There was also a brief moment shortly after when the Denmark international could have received another yellow card.

He said: “It’s not that I want to get in this situation where the fans are getting on me but if that’s what has to happen for me to perform then it’s fine by me.

“I won the duel with the skipper, he tried to get in my head but I closed his mouth with the second goal.

“I wasn't worried about getting sent off because I had tackled the ball and I think the referee got a bit carried away with the fans wanting him to send me off.”

Charlton face Bristol City at the Valley on Saturday in another relegation six-pointer.
