Charlton’s new number nine Simon Makienok believes his strike partnership with Johann Gudmundsson in Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Hull City saw the pair gel as a duo.

The Danish forward headed in the winger’s cross for the opening goal early in the second half.

That was cancelled out by Abel Hernandez’s 89th minute equaliser, but there was still time for Makienok to return the favour and head the ball into Gudmundsson’s path for the Iceland international to nod home a 98th minute winning goal.

The 6ft7in giant revealed: “Yesterday was the first time that myself and Johann trained to play together with one another – me as the striker and him in behind.

“We agreed on some things and we both brought the best out of each other this afternoon.

“It was such a relief to get the win in the end, because when you concede a goal to lose a lead in the way we did it can be very tough mentally.

“To see it go in was a relief for everyone and that’s why we celebrated in the way that we did.”

Makienok added: “It’s an amazing feeling to score, because I had some amazing chances on Tuesday evening against Nottingham Forest where I had big chances to score goals.

“I think I’m mentally strong so I was always confident.

“I’ve had a tough year in Italy where I didn’t play too much either, so I know the goals will come if I keep fighting.”

Gudmundsson’s late strike certainly came against the odds after Tigers substitute Hernandez had levelled for his side.

But Makienok insisted the Addicks never gave up.

He said: “When they equalised I thought we’d just get a draw, but then I looked at the coach and you could see that he was urging us to keep going and still try to find a winner.

“When I saw the eight added minutes then I thought ‘why not?’ and we may get some chances.

“And in the end the goal was perfect.”

Makienok was also keen to stress the important role played by The Valley faithful on what was a day to remember in SE7.

“The amount of added time helped us and the crowd,” he said.

“I think the intensity of the crowds here is so high.

“They are so close to the field and they’re on your back and that helps in situations and close games like today.”

The result means that Guy Luzon’s men continue to defy pre-season predictions from pundits who had Charlton down to struggle.

But the former Palermo man insists the team won’t be getting too carried away just yet, despite their remarkable start.

Makienok said: “We talked about the tough start, but the manager always emphasises that it doesn’t matter who the opponents are, we always want to win.

“We’re very happy with how we’ve begun the season and just want to keep going and look ahead one game at a time.

“The manager always adapts the tactics for the games to give us the best possible chance of getting three points. I think it’s the right way to do it.

“Each game and day we’ll fight and try to get better as a team.”
