Charlton boss Guy Luzon insists the more renowned teams in the league hold no fears for his side after they recorded a last-gasp 2-1 win over Hull City at The Valley.

Simon Makienok netted his first goal for the Addick before the Tigers looked to have rescued a point through Abel Hernandez’s 89th minute equaliser.

Hernandez thought he had completed a smash and grab raid for Hull, only to see his stoppage time header ruled out for offside.

And the hosts had the last laugh, as Johann Gudmundsson struck a 98th minute winner to leave the SE7 manager adamant his team fears nobody in the Championship.

Luzon said: “I don’t care what people write or say about the teams in the league, we’ll arrive at every game against anyone looking to win.

“Names of teams don’t bother me, I know we have the capability to win any game.

“We dominated the first half and we had a lot of the ball and possession.

“I spoke to the team at half time and told them not to be naïve, because sometimes possession is not enough.”

He added: “In football you must show quality and the result, and we changed the tempo and rhythm to help us win.

“We should quality and character with a lot of injuries this week, and the young players who took part showed that we have academy players we can trust.

“It’s a good day for the club, but it’s another step.

“But we must continue forward like this to succeed.”

The Icelandic winger’s dramatic winner sparked wild scenes of celebration around The Valley, with Luzon racing down the touchline to join the team bundle at the corner flag.

“I’m a little bit emotional and I was happy with the result,” he said.

“The referee sent me into the stand, but if you told me before he’d do that and we’d win I would have been more than happy with that.”

Makienok’s second half header was his first in Charlton colours and having got off the mark against Steve Bruce’s men, Luzon insisted his target man can now push on.

The SE7 gaffer explained: “Simon did well in previous games, and especially Nottingham.

“I see his qualities every day in training and yesterday he was missing headers, but he scored the important one today and got an assist too.

“Johann and Simon can be a good combination for us.

“All summer I worked hard to get this side a number nine because we lacked that last season.

“I’m sure he can continue to help us, he still can show a lot more quality and he’ll only get better.”

Asked about whether Addicks fan could expect any more transfer activity, the manager hinted there could be further additions to what is already a new-look squad.

Luzon said: “We still have a fairly small squad – and we need a minimum of one or two players.

“We need another attacking midfielder and then we’ll be OK.”
