Charlton head coach Guy Luzon hailed today’s 1-1 draw at Derby County as a “great point”.

The Addicks’ impressive defensive steel saw them take a share of the spoils from the iPro Stadium despite taking the lead three minutes into the second half, Tony Watt’s powerful shot deflecting over former Valley keeper Scott Carson and flying into the right-hand side of the net.

Derby responded well and saw a shot cleared off the line by Patrick Bauer before equalising through a low Chris Martin strike with 22 minutes remaining.

Despite the hosts threating to get a late winner, Luzon’s men had chances of their own but were unable to get a winner as the game ended in a draw.

And the Israeli was delighted with his side’s efforts throughout the match.

“It’s a good result but after you lead 1-0 and have some chances to finish the game, we needed to do it,” said the 40-year-old.

“Derby are a great team with a lot of quality but we organised well and I’m happy with a point.

“In the first half we had a tactical problem and fixed it second-half which stopped them playing freely with the ball in the middle,

“Because of that, we had chances to score but it’s a great point and not many teams will take draws here.”

Watt’s goal was his third in a week, a blistering start to the campaign from the Scottish centre forward.

And Luzon praised the 21-year-old for his work-rate during the match.

He said: “Tony scored a great goal, but he also worked very hard in defence with his pressing and it made a difference.

“But in the end everyone showed great character and quality.

“We organised well and everyone gave everything.”

The boss added: “I’m very pleased with our performance defensively and offensively in the second half.

“I’m more than happy with four points and we now head to Nottingham to collect try and collect the points there.”

Luzon also had plenty of praise for skipper Johnnie Jackson who came on with two minutes remaining for his 200th appearance on his 33rd birthday.

The manager said: “Johnnie Jackson is a legend at Charlton.

“He has a lot of character, he is a great guy and a great player. He will help us a lot this season.”
