Charlton midfielder Jordan Cousins was crowned the 2014/15 player of the year on Sunday evening at the Valley’s annual awards dinner.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season for the Addicks, making 47 appearances and scoring three goals in total.

And the academy product couldn’t hide his delight after receiving the accolade.

He said: “The list was a really high quality.

“Stephen (Henderson) and Johann (Gudmundsson) have been brilliant all season, so I was surprised to win the award because of how high their levels were.

“It’s a pleasure to win such a great award and it’s something I can hold on to for the rest of my career now.”

The transition from the left wing into the centre of the pitch undoubtedly saw the youngster used to far greater effect in the latter half of the season.

Cousins admitted that although playing centrally is his preferred position, he was just happy to be part of the side.

He explained: “Playing out wide was something that I was happy to do to be a part of the team.

“I’m still young, so I value every minute that I spend out on the pitch.

“I’ve always said that I’ll go out there to do any job that the manager asks me to.

“Everyone knows that my best and favoured position is central midfield, but at the time the team needed someone to play on the left and it was something I was happy to do.”

It wasn’t just a topsy-turvy season for the players on the field as Bob Peeters was replaced in the managerial hot seat by Guy Luzon in January.

But Cousins was keen to emphasise the fact that both managers had a positive impact on the side.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed the way we’ve played under both managers this season because over the course of the year they got us results.

“I’m one of those people who believes that you go out there and systems don’t win the game.

“It’s all about the experience for me and as long as we’re winning games, then that’s all that matters.”

The home-grown prodigy was also keen to focus on the work done in the background at Charlton as being key to his rapid rise into the first team.

He said: “To come through academy at a young age and to be in the first team now means everything, it’s so special for me.

“I’ve been at the club nine years now and to see everyone who’s been here since day one like Steve Avory is brilliant.

“He’s always given me help and guidance and discipline.

“Without people like him around the club then players like myself and Joe (Gomez) can’t be produced so that’s why I owe him so much.

“An event like this is something that everyone looks forward to and coming here and giving them a nice evening is what we love to do.

“To cap it off and win the award for myself makes it even better.”
