Victory over Wrexham lifted Welling United out of the bottom four and gave them a great chance of escaping the drop.

All their preparations were thrown up in the air when three players were held up in traffic and illness kept Barney Williams out.

Michael McEntegart replaced Jonathan Henly in goal.

Harry Osbourne moved to right wing back with Sam Berry returning at the back. Chris Bush filled in for Ben Jefford and Zac Fagan came in for Jake Gallagher.

Sam Corne was given his first start as captain.

Despite the handicap Welling came out fighting and went ahead early.

After Dominic Vose's free kick was flicked away for a corner, the same player moved across to take the corner.

His delivery was inch perfect and found Berry who had as much time as he wanted to head home.

It could have been two soon after when a superb deep cross by Chris Bush was knocked back across goal by Ross Lafayette but Kieron St. Aimie could not keep his shot down.

McEntegart had his first test when turning Joe Clarke's shot round the post.

From the corner, Manny Smith headed over from close range.

Welling increased their lead after 20 minutes.

Vose put a long ball forward that Ross Lafayette controlled skilfully before knocking back to Vose, and the Wings midfielder finished with a composed side footer into the roof of the net.

Lafayette then hit the post when Reece Harris stretched to cross but had he netted it would not stood as the linesman's offside flag was raised.

To make matters worse, Harris crashed into the hoardings and was unable to continue.

Jefford replaced him.

After the break the visitors looked to up the tempo but they still needed to defend, not always legally as was the case when Sam Finley crashed into Lafayette to earn himself a caution.

After that it was pretty much one way traffic with McEntegart tested with a succession of inswinging corners and little protection from the referee.

Michael Chambers made a great tackle as it looked as if Connor Jennings had burst through.

However, at the other end, Steve Tomassen did equally well to thwart Kieron St. Aimie.

St. Aimie dragged a shot wide just after Louis Moult came on for Wrexham as they switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

Moult had a great chance when not picked up from a near post corner but his flicked header flew into the side netting.

It looked as if Welling were going to see the game out until with seven minutes remaining, the otherwise immaculate Corne played a loose pass across the field and Andy Bishop was able to race away and finish with composure.

Substitute Rob Evans had a great chance when unmarked from a long cross field pass but his downward header was gobbled up by McEntegart.

Finlay shot over and Kyle Storer had a shot deflected wide as Wrexham searched for a late equaliser.

Deep into injury time, Jennings effort was pushed out by McEntegart and Storer was unable to net the rebound.

Loui Fazakerley's Wings now head to the relegation shoot out at Alfreton Town knowing that their destiny is in their own hands.
