Guy Luzon praised his side’s organised display as they swept Wigan Athletic aside with a  3-0 win at the DW Stadium on Friday evening.

First half goals from Frederic Bulot and Igor Vetokele were followed up by a late sealer from debutant Chris Eagles as Charlton got their second 3-0 win in as many games, following last weekend’s triumph over Brentford at The Valley.

The Israeli head coach was delighted the Addicks were able to keep the momentum going and crush Wigan’s mini-revival after their own victory midweek at Reading.

Luzon said, “To come here after the 3-0 (against Brentford) and after Wigan had won in the middle of the week - we knew they’re a very good team.

“They’re fighting to close the six points they need to stay in the league. We knew it would not be an easy game.

“We came here and worked fantastically with our organisation in defence.

“Our goalkeeper didn’t touch the ball all game.”

He added: “We scored three goals, we had another two or three chances to score.

“We’re delighted and we need to continue.

“We had two chances and scored twice, but they were a very good two chances. We deserved it.”

The surface at the DW Stadium, which is shared with the Wigan Warriors rugby league side, was not in the best of conditions.

But the recently appointed Charlton chief would not have accepted that as an excuse even if the result hadn’t gone his team’s way.

“The pitch was very bad to play football,” Luzon admitted.

“Our target was to come here and to play football, to play the ball on the ground like we did against Brentford.

“A good team knows how to win here.

“They know how to win on a good pitch and on a bad pitch.

“I’m happy that they did.”

The goal scorers will of course take all the headlines, but it was a fiercely organised rearguard action from the south east Londoners which reduced Wigan to speculative long range efforts.

Roger Johnson in particular impressed his head coach.

“All the players worked fantastically in defence and fantastically in attack,” beamed Luzon.

“Roger Johnson has a lot of experience and lot of quality and I’m very that he’s part of the team.

“It’s our target to keep a clean sheet because we know when we organise and we close the middle, we know we have the quality to score every game.

“The connection between defence and attack - when you have a good defence, you’ll also have a situation to score in attack.”

Bulot scored his second in two games as he broke the deadlock for the visitors and also added a fine assist for Charlton’s second, buried by Vetokele.

Of the Gabon international, Luzon said, “Bulot has been magnificent the last two games.

“He’s been fantastic in defence and fantastic in attack.

“I’m very happy with his performance, and he needs to continue like that.”

Luzon was also keen to praise the 553 visiting supporters who made the long journey to the north west on a drizzly Friday evening.

“Fantastic that they came to support us,” he said.

“I’m happy that their journey back to Charlton will be happy.”

The result sees the Addicks rise into the top half, even if only for one day as the rest of the Championship will catch up with their games this afternoon.

But Luzon revealed that despite Charlton’s position hovering just above the relegation, he never worried about Charlton dropping through that trapdoor into League One.

“I’ve always had the confidence that we will stay up, but we need to continue to work,” explained the boss.

“The table now is not important, what is important is that we improve also in the next game.”
